CLIMB: Trait-Based Strategies and Interventions for Engaging Complex, High-Risk Clients

Working effectively with complex, high-risk clients requires more than empathy, insight, or good intentions — it requires precision. This intermediate-to-advanced presentation introduces CLIMB, a trait-based, clinically practical framework designed to help treatment providers, community supervision professionals, law enforcement, and victim advocates engage difficult populations while maintaining safety, accountability, and forward movement.

Drawing from real-world forensic treatment settings, this training applies the Risk-Need-Responsivity (R-N-R) model to populations often experienced as “treatment-resistant,” including individuals with psychopathic traits, substance use disorders, chronic mental illness, traumatic brain injury/CTE, and complex female presentations. Psychopathic traits are conceptualized on a continuum rather than a binary, allowing participants to identify leverage points where intervention is most likely to produce meaningful behavioral change.

The CLIMB framework emphasizes strategic engagement, reasonable and consistent goal-setting, and interventions that reduce risk while increasing client investment through measurable progress and success. Participants will learn how to move away from power struggles and ineffective confrontations and toward targeted strategies that align treatment intensity and approach with actual criminogenic and clinical needs.

This training is designed for professionals with intermediate to advanced experience, as well as those who
have completed foundational training in psychopathy and wish to deepen their applied skill set. Emphasis
is placed on immediate, transferable techniques that can be implemented the next day in supervision,
treatment, and multidisciplinary team settings.

From High Risk to Hope: A Conversation with Men Who Chose Change

What does meaningful change look like in domestic violence intervention? How do individuals who once presented with significant risk factors come to recognize the impact of their behavior, develop accountability, and sustain lasting change? This unique and interactive panel brings together men who entered domestic violence treatment presenting with elevated levels of risk, risk of incarceration, and who have since successfully completed treatment. Guided by a moderator, panelists will share their personal journeys, discuss the challenges they encountered throughout treatment, describe the factors that contributed to their growth, and reflect on the ongoing work required to maintain healthy, non-abusive relationships. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions directly to the panelists, providing a rare opportunity to hear firsthand perspectives on accountability, behavioral change, treatment engagement, and recovery from those who have lived the process.
